I'm only happy when it rains.

It rained for the first time in over a week overnight. I missed that. I’ve always loved the rain. Where some people find it depressing, I find my mind slows down in a way where I can focus more. I’m typically more creative. I’m calmer. I’m usually in a pretty good mood when it rains.

I was a little stir-crazy this morning. My usual spots for thought weren’t working for me. I journaled from my kitchen counter, something I don’t remember doing previously. I couldn’t settle down to write this piece either. It’s still grey outside, slightly misty even. So, I decided to head out to the coffee shop next door. Getting outside cleared my head a bit. It helped to feel the cool mist this morning. Now, I’m parked next to a big window where I can take the outdoors in and words are suddenly happening.

I wonder why rainy days make me happy while it dampens the mood of others. My mom often complains about dark days like this. Is it because I was born in a rainy environment? I was born in late October in the Pacific Northwest, after all. I grew up in Florida where we had plenty of liquid sunshine. I’m sure there are memories connected to it.

But, I think another part of it is I’m forced to be indoors more. That limitation maybe restricts me to taking care of the things I wouldn’t when I have the freedom to leave home and stay dry. I’m sure there are other factors too. And it’s not just me. The band Garbage sang about it after all.

This was my setup this morning. How could I not write in a spot like this. Once I got rolling, all the sounds in the building seemed to fade.

Songs in the Chaos

This is my weekly list of songs that either caught my attention or came to mind this past week. I post these throughout the week on a site called Crucial Tracks, where they’re also added to a playlist on Apple Music. Feel free to follow me on either space.
